The Short Answer: $300 to $3,000 a Month, and Why the Range Is So Wide
If you have asked three agencies for SEO quotes in Kelowna, you probably got three numbers that look nothing alike. One says $349 a month. One says $1,500. One says $4,000 and a 12-month contract. Nobody explains the gap, so it feels like somebody must be lying.
Nobody has to be lying. They are quoting different amounts of work. Here is what SEO actually costs in Canada in 2026, in one table:
| How you buy SEO | Typical cost (2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | $0, plus 5 to 10 hours a week | Brand-new businesses with more time than money |
| Local SEO retainer | $300 to $800 per month | Most Kelowna and Vernon service businesses |
| Full agency retainer | $1,500 to $5,000 per month | Competitive industries, multiple cities |
| Hourly consulting | $150 to $350 per hour | One-off audits and second opinions |
| One-time project | $2,500 to $15,000 | Site rebuilds and migrations |
Those big-agency numbers are real. Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers and found the most common retainer lands between $501 and $1,000 USD a month, with agency retainers averaging around $3,200 USD. But buried in that same survey is the number that matters for you: providers serving a local market charge about $1,557 USD a month on average, less than half of what worldwide campaigns cost.
And that average still includes local campaigns in brutal markets like Toronto real estate law. Kelowna is not that. Which brings us to the part most pricing guides skip.
Why Kelowna SEO Should Cost Less Than Toronto or Vancouver SEO
SEO pricing is mostly a function of two things: how many keywords you need to win, and how strong the sites currently holding them are. Kelowna is friendly on both counts.
The keyword set is small
A Kelowna plumber needs to show up for maybe 30 to 50 searches: "plumber kelowna", "hot water tank replacement kelowna", "emergency plumber west kelowna", and their variations. A national brand fights over thousands of keywords. Less ground to cover means fewer hours of work per month, and the price should reflect that. Single-city campaigns typically run 30 to 50 percent less than national ones for exactly this reason.
The competition is beatable
Search results in big cities are held by companies spending five figures a month on SEO. Many Kelowna and Vernon service searches are held by sites that have not been touched in years: thin pages, dead blogs, half-finished Google Business Profiles. We work these exact search results every week from up Highway 97 in Vernon, and the pattern repeats across the Kelowna and Vernon markets: steady, correct work moves you here. It does not take a $4,000 retainer to outwork a website nobody has updated since 2024.
The flip side matters too. If an agency quotes you Toronto pricing for a single-city Okanagan campaign, ask them to walk you through exactly what they will do each month. Sometimes there is a real answer. Often there is not.
What You Should Actually Get at Each Price Point
Price alone tells you nothing. The deliverable list is everything. Here is what each tier should include, so you can compare quotes line by line.
$300 to $800 a month: the local foundation
- Google Business Profile management: categories, services, photos, posts, and Q&A kept current. This is the single biggest lever for Map Pack rankings.
- On-page fixes: titles, headings, and content on your core service pages that actually match what people search.
- Citations: your name, address, and phone number made consistent across directories.
- A review strategy: a repeatable way to ask every happy customer, not a one-time blast.
- Reporting from Google Search Console: real impressions and clicks, not a pretty dashboard.
This tier covers what most single-location Okanagan businesses actually need. It is also the tier where we planted our flag: our Local SEO plan is $349 a month, and the price is published right on the page, because we think you should be able to see what SEO costs before you sit through a sales call.
$800 to $1,500 a month: add content
Everything above, plus new pages built every month: individual service pages, city pages, and blog posts that answer real customer questions. This is the tier for businesses chasing several services across several Okanagan communities, where the keyword set gets bigger.
$2,000 and up: the competitive tier
Aggressive content production, link building, and digital PR. In Kelowna, this makes sense for a short list of verticals: law, real estate, dental, and anything else where a single customer is worth thousands of dollars and every competitor is already spending. If you run a landscaping company, you almost certainly do not need this.
Five Red Flags That You Are About to Overpay for SEO
The Okanagan has good SEO providers. It also has the other kind. Watch for these:
- "Guaranteed #1 rankings." Nobody can guarantee a Google ranking. Google says so itself. An agency that guarantees positions is telling you how they sell, not how they work.
- 12-month lock-in contracts. SEO takes months, but that is an argument for patience, not for a contract you cannot exit. Month-to-month providers exist at every tier. If the work is good, you will stay anyway.
- You do not get access to your own accounts. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, and website belong to you. If an agency creates them under their own logins and keeps the keys, leaving them later means starting over. Own everything from day one.
- $99-a-month packages. At $99, nobody is doing real work on your site. At best you get automated reports. At worst you get spam links that can get your site penalized and cost more to clean up than proper SEO would have cost to start.
- Vanity reports. Ranking #1 for "best affordable plumbing solutions kelowna bc" means nothing if nobody searches it. Ask every provider the same question: which searches with real volume did we gain, and how many calls came from them?
How to Tell Your SEO Is Working Before You Renew
Whatever you pay, judge the work the same way. In a market the size of Kelowna or Vernon, here is a realistic scorecard:
- By month 2 to 3: impressions rising in Google Search Console. This is Google testing your pages in more searches. It comes before clicks, and it is the earliest honest signal.
- By month 3 to 6: Map Pack appearances on searches that matter, and clicks trending up. Check this yourself: open an incognito window and search your service plus your city.
- By month 6 and beyond: phone calls and form fills you can trace to search. If your provider is not tracking calls, ask why.
If you want the full breakdown of what happens in which month, we wrote a realistic SEO timeline that applies to any local business, not just contractors.
