Is the Chamber of Commerce Worth It for a Contractor? We Checked 798 Okanagan Trades Against 5 Chamber Directories. Members Rank Higher, but No Higher Than Non-Members With the Same Reviews.

Five Okanagan chambers, 1,787 member listings and 798 local trades on Google. Here's what a membership does for your ranking, what it costs, and what to check if you're already a member.

Every chamber of commerce pitches a trade business on two things: people and visibility. The people part is hard to measure. The visibility part isn't. A membership comes with a directory listing and a link to your website, and Google says links count. Its own page on local ranking says a business's prominence is “based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.” That's from Google's tips to improve your local ranking.

So we checked. On October 30, 2026, we ran Google's business search for 16 trades in Vernon, Kelowna, West Kelowna and Penticton, three times over. Then we matched every business it showed us against the member directories of five Okanagan chambers.

Only 74 of the 798 trades (9.3 percent, about 1 in 11) are listed in any of the five directories. Members do show up in Google's top 3 more often. They also have nearly three times as many reviews, and when you compare them with non-members that have similar review counts, the gap goes away.

One thing up front: Osprey is a member of the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce, so we have a stake in this question too.

The Short Answer: Join for the People, Not for Your Google Ranking

If you're hoping a chamber membership will move you up on Google, our data says don't count on it. If you're asking whether $225 to $300 a year is worth it to meet the people who hire trades, refer trades and build things in your town, that's a different question. For a lot of trades the answer is yes.

Here's what we found:

How We Checked 798 Okanagan Trades Against 5 Chamber Directories

We ran Google's business search for roofers, plumbers, electricians, heating and air conditioning, landscapers, general contractors, painters, flooring, concrete, gutters, tree service, fencing, window installers, garage doors, pest control and excavating in Vernon, Kelowna, West Kelowna and Penticton. That's 64 searches, and we ran all of them three times, about five minutes apart, because Google's order shuffles a little from one run to the next. We asked Google to include businesses that hide their address, which it leaves out unless you ask.

That gave us 886 businesses. We set aside 88 stores, suppliers and manufacturers, which left 798 trades.

Then we collected the member directories of the five chambers that cover those towns: the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce, the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Westside Board of Trade in West Kelowna and the Lake Country Chamber of Commerce. That's 1,787 member listings. Kelowna's website asks automated visitors to wait ten seconds between pages, so we did.

A trade counted as a member when the listing's phone number or street address matched its Google profile, or when a one-location business matched on its website or on a name we checked by hand. For franchises and companies with several locations, only the location whose phone or address matched counted.

What this can't tell you:

We haven't named any business in this post.

Only 1 in 11 Okanagan Trades Are Listed, and Plumbers Join Most

74 of the 798 trades are listed in at least one of the five directories, and 3 are in two or more. A town's own chamber reaches fewer still:

Searches inTrades Google showedListed with any of the 5 chambersListed with that town's chamber
Vernon23627 (11.4%)24 (10.2%)
Kelowna29024 (8.3%)18 (6.2%)
Penticton26922 (8.2%)19 (7.1%)
West Kelowna27422 (8.0%)6 (2.2%)

A business can show up in more than one town's searches, so the towns overlap. Kelowna's real share is probably a little higher than this, for the reason above.

Plumbers join most: 19 of 77, about 1 in 4. Heating and air conditioning companies are next at 14 of 72, then landscapers at 11 of 71. At the other end, 0 of 67 concrete companies, 1 of 47 fencing companies, 2 of 67 excavating companies and 2 of 55 tree services are listed.

Members also tend to have a shop or an office. Only 11 of the 74 members hide their address on Google, against 251 of the 724 non-members.

Members Rank Higher on Google, but Only as High as Their Reviews Predict

In their own town's searches, members of that town's chamber made Google's top 3 in 22.2 percent of their appearances (54 of 243). Everyone else made it 14.7 percent of the time. That looks like a chamber bonus. We couldn't find one.

Members have far more reviews. The median member has about 55 Google reviews. The median non-member has 19. And reviews line up with ranking: in these searches, trades with 200 or more reviews made the top 3 about nine times as often as trades with fewer than 10. So we compared like with like:

Google reviewsTop 3 rate: members of the town's chamberTop 3 rate: everyone else
Fewer than 100.0% (0 of 8)3.4% (25 of 730)
10 to 4914.3% (13 of 91)12.7% (182 of 1435)
50 to 19927.4% (23 of 84)25.6% (172 of 671)
200 or more30.0% (18 of 60)31.9% (68 of 213)

Within each review range, members and non-members land in the top 3 at about the same rate. If members ranked exactly like non-members with the same review counts, they'd have made the top 3 21.6 percent of the time. They made it 22.2 percent.

That doesn't mean the link does nothing. With 74 businesses, a difference of a point or two is noise either way, so a small effect could hide in there. What we can say is that there's no sign of a big one. It's one link, and every other member gets the same one. What does line up with ranking here is reviews, and we worked out how many you need in Vernon or Kelowna in an earlier study.

Kelowna and Vernon do it the old way, and for a link that's the good way. Each member gets a page with its own address, the website link is a normal link, and nothing on the page tells Google to skip it. Vernon also lists its 700 member pages in a sitemap, which is how a site tells Google what's there.

West Kelowna and Lake Country put your listing behind a #. Their directory tool shows each business at an address that ends in something like #!biz/id/ and a string of letters. Google's guidance on web addresses says “Google Search generally doesn't support URL fragments,” which is the part after the #. Whether Google treats each of those listings as its own page, we can't tell from outside. West Kelowna also keeps a plain copy of each listing for search engines. In all 4 copies we checked, the website link is marked nofollow, which asks Google not to count it, and the site's robots.txt rules block search engines from that copy anyway. It also charges $25 a year to show the link.

Penticton puts all 457 members on one page. The listings only appear after a script loads them, and the links are plain. Yours sits next to about 450 others.

Is a chamber link a paid link? Google hasn't published a rule on chamber directories. Its spam policy says paid links are fine “as long as they are qualified with a rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" attribute value” on the link. A membership buys a lot more than a link, so we wouldn't lose sleep over it. We just wouldn't join for the link.

1 in 6 Member Listings Shows a Different Phone Number Than Google

A chamber listing is one more place your business name, address and phone number appear online. Those should match your Google profile, and a fair number don't. We compared the 76 member listings we matched with the Google profiles of the same businesses:

A wrong number on a chamber page costs you the call from the person who looked you up there. It also adds a mismatch to the places your business is listed online. We covered why that matters in our check of Okanagan phone numbers.

Who Should Join, and a 10-Minute Checkup for Your Listing

A chamber membership makes the most sense if:

Wait on it if what you need right now is more homeowner calls from Google. Put that money and time into your Google profile and your reviews first.

You may also hear that people are 80% more likely to buy from a chamber member. That number comes from a 2012 release by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives about “a national survey of 2,000 adults” by The Schapiro Group. It says that when people know a small business is a member, “they are 49% more likely to think favorably of it and 80% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future.” That's what American adults told a survey 14 years ago, not a count of who bought what. It's a fair sign that membership reads as trustworthy. It isn't a sales forecast. You can read the 2012 release yourself.

If you're already a member, do this checkup:

  1. Find your listing. Search your chamber's directory for your business name.
  2. Check the phone number. It should match your Google profile exactly.
  3. Click your website link. Make sure it lands on your current site and that the address starts with https.
  4. Fill in the description. List the services you offer and the towns you serve.
  5. Think twice about paid add-ons. An enhanced listing or a paid website link may be worth it for the people who browse the directory. Don't pay for it expecting a jump on Google.

We help trades across Vernon and Kelowna with this kind of cleanup. Our local SEO work starts with your Google profile and the listings that point to it. If you've wondered whether your town belongs in your name too, we tested that in 384 Okanagan searches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a chamber of commerce link help my Google ranking?

It's a link from a local organization, and Google says the number of websites that link to you is part of local prominence. But in our check of 798 Okanagan trades, members of a town's chamber made the top 3 about as often as non-members with similar review counts (22.2 percent against 21.6 percent expected). Some directories also mark the link nofollow or show listings behind a # in the address. Treat the link as a small extra, not the reason to join.

How much does it cost to join the Kelowna, Vernon or Penticton chamber?

As published on October 30, 2026: the Greater Vernon Chamber starts at $299 a year plus a $50 admin fee for new members. Penticton & Wine Country starts at $260 a year for 1 to 2 employees, plus GST. The Greater Westside Board of Trade in West Kelowna starts at $220.50 a year for 1 to 3 employees, plus $25 for the website link and a $25 one-time fee. Lake Country is $225 a year. The Kelowna Chamber doesn't publish prices, so you'll need to call or email.

Is it true people are 80% more likely to buy from a chamber member?

That figure comes from a 2012 release by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives about a survey of 2,000 American adults. People said they'd be 80% more likely to buy from a small business they knew was a member. It measures what people said, not what they bought, and it isn't Canadian. It's fair evidence that membership looks trustworthy. It isn't a sales forecast.
